Meditation

January 4, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Meditation Group

Join this informal gathering to develop and practice basic mindfulness skills in a supportive environment. It’s a terrific way to decompress, relax and give your brain a boost.  Jon Kabat-Zinn describes mindfulness meditation as… the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose in the present moment and non-judgmentally.

The Meditation Group focuses on basic mindfulness skills. More and more scientific research suggests regular meditation can strengthen functions of the brain that control attention, calm the stress response, increase positive emotions and strengthen the immune system. It further supports cognitive function linked to goal directed behaviour and has been correlated to improved energy levels, improved memory, increased cortical thickness (which slows the aging rate of the brain), promotes new brain cell growth and improved sleep.

The group had been meeting monthly in a classroom at The Old School House (TOSH) in Qualicum Beach before the COVID pandemic required its closure. We are very grateful to have been invited to gather in such a delightful environment. During these gatherings, we took time to get to know one another and discuss some of the basic principles of Mindfulness Meditation and meditated as a group using the guided meditations found on Insight Timer, a free Meditation App, as well as leading our own.

Like everyone, the pandemic has required us to make several changes over these past months, almost 2 years now. We have moved from emailing each member guided meditations from the free Insight Timer App to meeting outdoors at neighbourhood parks to meeting via Zoom and to meeting in each others’ homes. In the future, there may be possibility to return to TOSH.

Currently we meet twice a month, one time via Zoom and the other in a members’ home. When we meet in a home, we ask that everyone participating has been double vaccinated. We continue to practice mindfulness meditation using Insight Timer and sometimes lead our own plus enjoy getting to know one another.

Newcomers are welcome to join us to determine if group meditation is for them.  Please contact me at the email address below for details regarding dates and times and further information.
