Adventures of Surfer Dog
Heh dude - where's the action?
Many of us met him for the first time at the St. Paddy's Tacky Appy Night, his origins unknown. He was a hot, hot, hot commodity that night and exchanged hands many times during the tacky gift exchange. Just looking at him it was obvious he was a dog with a great sense of adventure. That evening he went home with Denis and Lorraine Brost. Unfortunately the Brosts simply placed him on their back porch. No outings! No adventures! No meeting other newcomers! Boring!
So, certain unidentified newcomers have kidnapped Surfer Dog from his boring existence. He wants and needs some fun and adventure in his life. He wants to meet new people and make new friends. His kidnappers are sending him out to meet you and have some fun. If he arrives on your door step please help him make it happen.
- Use your imagination and dress him up, take him out, whatever you'd like but don't lose him as he will be returning to his ho hum life in Chartwell.
- Keep him for one week; two at the most.
- Record his adventures in the book provided. Also send one jpeg photo and a very short write up of his adventures with you to our webmaster (under Contact) to post on the Newcomers' website.
As soon as your adventure with Surfer Dog is complete, drop him off at another newcomers' front door along with the instructions and record book. Check the current membership list to find another "host" for Surfer Dog and please make sure that the newcomer is in town and not away on vacation first.
Have fun and scroll down to keep track of Surfer Dog's Adventures!

Awsome Game! Ada & partner on the Court Aug 6/11
Surfer Dog mysteriously appeared on our front doorstep. Since he was looking for adventure & appeared relatively fit, we took him with us to play in a tennis tournament in Parksville where his serve sizzled & his backhand blazed. To our surprise he placed second & won a can of used tennis balls. Ada & David Sarsiat

What's so dangerous about that! Aug 15/11
August 15th saw us heading out to Stamp Falls Provinical Park with Surfer Dog in tow. As he's always lived by the sea he was very excited about travelling so far inland. He was relieved to see there was water at the park as it made him feel more at home. We had to hold him back from surfing the falls and rapids which we thought too dangerous with all the rocks around. He was definitely not happy about that and declared that from now on he would stick to being by the ocean! Ann and Len Flint

Chillin at the B & B Aug 25/11
Surfer Dog arrived at Cedar and Sea B & B a few days ago. He said after his previous adventures he was in need of a little R & R. (We never did convince him that he didn't need his surfboard in the bath). He 'chilled' for a few days before he was on the road again. P.S. Fortunately, after enjoying the company of Surfer Dog, little Bo is not yet asking for red nail polish. Gary Miller & Lois Walker.

Now where did that Golden Retriever go? Sep 5/11
Surfer Dog had a great beach outing on Labour Day with my nephew’s two boys and girl, enjoying and participating in a skim board competition. It’s sad to say that SD was disappointed that there wasn’t enough surf for him to show us how adept he is at his favourite sport – surfing the “big ones”. Things looked up though when SD met a cute golden retriever. They soon disappeared into the bushes and the rest is censored. SD did eventually come back with a smile on his face....another exciting day in the adventures of SD! Charlie O'Hara

Man - do these dudes ever quit? It's almost past my bedtime. Sep 20/11
On Sept 14th Surfer Dog's visit started out quietly looking over his hostess' pond and garden, waiting for the deer, ducks and a couple of river otters to come and play. Alas, they never showed up! That all changed on Sept 20th when SD was the guest of honour at the Five Corks Wine Club. Who ever said retired folks in QB are quiet? Lucette Kirbach

Did I hear someone say martinis? Sep/11
SD showed up at Bistro 694 in QB ready for an evening of fine food and wine. Unfortunately he indulged in far too many martinis...and while he wasn't feeling too well the next morning, he was certainly the life of the party. When it came time to pay the bill, SD admitted he had no money so was reluctantly put to work in the kitchen. He showed great promise as a budding chef but also showed a tendency to catch fire when working in close proximity to gas burners (giving new meaning to the term "hot dog"). Sadly SD's culinary adventure was over as quickly as it had begun. Perhaps we'll name a martini after him at the Bistro. Nancy & Tony Szeles

Boss, hold the plane! hold the plane! Ah sorry, changed my mind. Oct/11
In late October SD noticed many of his Newcomer friends leaving for warmer climates. He began reminiscing about his days on the Big Surf Circuit: North shore of Maui, Gold Coast of Australia, Big Sur California....fabulous times! So, off to the QB airport he went looking for flights to tropical destinations. Ready to jump into a little Cessna 172 heading to the tropics, he suddenly paused. The sun was shining, eagles were flying, and the ocean sparkled blue in the distance. “What am I thinking?” he barked. “It's taken years to get to someplace this wonderful, why would I leave now?” So, Surfer Dog is staying home this year and surfing on the North Shore at QB, his own little piece of paradise. "yowza"! Look at that bathing beauty! Oct/11
Surfer Dog arrived October 29th, just in time for his favorite Newcomers' party. The scary skeleton did not deter him from getting a peek at the 1920's bathing beauty. He is such a "DOG"!!
He met his ol' buddy, Otter Surfer and together they waited for all the little ghosts and goblins to show up on Halloween. He had to borrow a toque as he was too cool! After having too much candy he's off to another adventure. Elaine & Bill McQuitty

November 2 - 14. Fall finds SD searching high and low for water warm enough to show off his prowess and not turn him into a Chili Dog. Having looked from the top of the mountain, and then searching the forest paths he was lured towards the sound of running water. He was just about to shoot the falls at Three Toad Tub when he noticed the less than friendly stares of some locals, had second thoughts and decided to continue his search elsewhere.
P.S. SD is most distressed that the photos of this outing are unavailable for viewing on the website. John & Maureen Breckon

Yeah, a road trip! Are we there yet? Now? How much longer? Nov 24/11
With growing concern, SD has noticed the days grow shorter, wetter and colder. Will he be forced to leave the Island for warmer climes? Then SD discovered the bright side of the Winter Season - the Ladysmith Festival of Lights. A fun bus trip with 48 of his closest friends, a spaghetti dinner at the Eagles Hall, the Santa Parade and the festive lights. Although he got a little chilled watching the parade, Tim Horton's hot chocolate soon warmed him up. And the Fireworks - pure magic! Exhausted from his big day, he slept all the way back to QB, dreaming of further winter adventures. Anna & Paul Jensen

Golfers love to score! Dec 7/11
When SD heard we were going to a party at the lovely and posh Fairwinds Resort, he insisted on coming along. His reputation as being a Party Animal and a bit of a character was confirmed by his casting amorous glances at the deer grazing the roadside as we drove to the Resort. SD was so impressed with the COOL club cars at Fairwinds he just had to get behind the wheel. Upon our arrival at the restaurant he showed excellent restraint by not raising his leg to the Christmas tree, nor tearing into the lovely prizes. Well, perhaps spoken too soon - he quickly managed to clear our table, with patrons holding their noses. Yes, the dog did it! A few minutes later we were able to return to enjoy a delicious turkey dinner. Despite his earlier behaviour, SD was treated to a few morsels, albeit seated a fair distance from others. He left the party wearing his antlers and garland, but was also seen wearing something with a tartan pattern...ah, where will he turn up next? Keith & Anne Richardson

Guid cheerio the nou! Aug 9/11
SD arrived on the day we were going out for a fun evening dressed in traditional Scottish garb. "Wid ye fancy a wee bit o' dancin?", we asked SD. "Wid a haetae dress in yur strange claes?" he asked in the best Scottish accent that we had heard in a while. "Och aye" we said, "Ye’ll hae a lo’ a fun, an', by the way whaur did ye get such a gid Scottish accent?" "Nae bother" he said, "accents urr wan a ma amazin' talents. Je suistrèssophistiquée" he continued in impeccable French. We quickly found him a kilt and a hat. He was the life and soul of the party and even stood on the table to keep us entertained. However, we did have some concerns about the fact that he always kept his hand under his kilt. When the dancing started, he was a little hesitant and retired for a bit to a cubby hole under the stage...what was really under those kilts? "Och aye, commando style. I'm in!" he said as he popped out of his hideaway, once again with his hand down his kilt. He then joined in the dancing. He was a quick learner and at the end of the evening received resounding applause for his participation. "Thon Scottish dancin’ is magic", he said. "Ah’ll be back taedae it again, naebother. Thanks and tarrafurrnoo!" John & Irene Telfer

After a long and exhausting year with the youthful rambunctious folks of QB, Surfer Dog sought a Zen moment with the Buddha to contemplate 2012. This wild and crazy dog wondered if he could carry on at this hectic pace, but upon deep meditation about the meaning of it all with the master, he realized that his destiny is to lead a wild and crazy life as Surfer Dog. It could not be any other way, so he wishes all his young friends at QB a very HAPPY NEW YEAR. Roger & Karynn Oxley

oooh, it's a great sport! Jan 12/12
We found SD, shivering in the winter cold, outside our home. A shot of scotch, warmer clothes, and an invite to a brisk game of curling was called for. SD said he knew all about curling. He proceeded to play the “skip” position, leading the team to victory. He was a big hit! Next, across the street to the Local Legion for an evening of Texas Hold'em. The stakes were high and competition fierce. He managed to make enough for a round of drinks and dog biscuits. A game of snooker followed in the Legion's Games Room. SD met many new people during this adventure and spending time with this lively canine was a treasure for all. Rob & Lori Diack

Yahoo - watch me hang ten! Feb 14/12
When SD heard some Newcomers were going storm watching in Tofino he made such a fuss that we took him along. He was overjoyed to find himself on Long Beach and couldn't contain himself as he raced towards the waves, anxious to show off his prowess. Unlike other surfers, and even though it was February, SD distained wearing a wet suit. He hesitated briefly when he saw how big the waves were and then threw himself into the surf. Eventually he was persuaded to come out of the water. Arriving at Pacific Sands Resort, he was delighted to find yummy food and a glass of wine! Pippa Heck
